One Year and 16,000 Miles on a 44 Foot Sailing Yacht
This is the story of sailing
yacht Espiritu and her crew Natascha and Stefan Verweij during a one year journey
from Singapore to The Netherlands that started 31st July 2004.
We are excited to share with you our adventures on the oceans, of tropical
islands with beautiful beaches and romantic sunsets. However, we won’t withhold
you from possible bad experiences such as storms, calms, tiring night watches
and accidental gybes.
From Singapore we'll set sail towards Indonesia
and after rounding Sumatra enter the South Indian Ocean. We’ll visit Cocos
Keeling, Seychelles, Comoros and Madagascar
before setting sail towards the challaging hurdle of Cape Hope in South
Africa.
After rounding Cape Hope, we'll cross the Atlantic. This passage is close to
6,000 miles to reach the Caribbean with a stop at St.
Helena and Brazil. We plan to stay quite
some time in the Caribbean and the British
Virgin Islands. Via Bermuda and the Azores,
we'll finally arrive in the North Sea and head to the port of Scheveningen in
The Netherlands.

One ship drives east, and another
west
With the self-same winds that blow;
It is the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That decides the way to go.
Like the winds of the sea are the ways
of fate,
As they voyage along through life;
It is the will of the soul
That decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife.
