October 2003 - Equator Cruise

Sunrise departureAnchorageTuk Tuk at wheel

We sailed the Equator Cruise with Espiritu, a five-day sailing event, together with 12 other (sailing and power) boats. Kent Goeking, who sailed with us from Hong Kong to Singapore, joined again this time. How amazing, after what he's been suffering during the challenging Hong Kong journey:-).

Stefan & Tuk TukOn 14th October we sailed from Singapore to Nongsa Point Marina at Batam / Indonesia. The next day we set sail in southerly direction. After a lovely day of sailing between the beautiful Riau Islands, we dropped our anchor in a deserted bay, viewing a white beach. We enjoyed the sunset, accompanied with a glass of wine......Life is perfect!!

Unexpectedly, a guard with a gun got dropped on our boat, by one of the boats belonging to the Cruise organisation. What the hell is this? We didn't order this guy! They explained us that this was for safety reasons, a few piracy incidents have been reported recently in this area. On commercial vessels and not on cruising boats, but just in case...So we had the joy of having Tuk Tuk on board. He turned out to be a very nice guy and he knew how to sail. Could have been worse!0 Degrees!

WeAt the equator left early next day and after a couple of hours we passed the Equator (see right picture, 0.00.000N). We celebrated this special occasion accordingly with a loud blow on our horn and Stefan and Kent jumped into the water with a cold beer. After that we sailed to our last destination, the island Lingga. A beautiful island in the middle of nowhere and again we anchored in a very nice bay. The barbecue and beers at Lingga were lovely and we've met some nice Equator-sailors.

On our sail back to Nongsa, we had hardly any wind, so we used our "iron sail" during most of the day. We didn't make much speed, so we anchored one more night at our first anchor spot. BBQ LinggaNo problem, since we were accompanied by some other (slow) boats. Together with the crew of the other boats, we created our own party on a big motor yacht. They had just catched a big fish, which we put on the barbecue. The fish tasted great, again with the necessary wine and beers.Crew

Absolutely a wonderful trip and very good for our sailing experience!!
